The effect of incentivising pre-class reading on engagement and student performance

A commonly-held belief is that many university students are ‘assessment-driven’; is, engage more with activities assessed compared those not. ‘Incentivised engagement’ includes the practice of providing incentives (such as marks or otherwise) for to in particular activities. Perusall a social annotation platform designed increase student engagement pre-class reading. In this study, second-year undergraduate Statistics Engineering module were invited carry out weekly reading activity via platform. During first half semester, students’ did not count towards marks, whereas during second it did. We present estimated effect incentivised engagement, use platform, on and performance. Our results show incentivisation increased who previously less engaged For had lower performance summative assessments, there was also an following incentivisation.
